In our class today, we had an activity where we would pretend to be rich/poor by drawing amounts of money out of a bag. There were three ranges, the rich that had 2500$, the medium with 1000$, and lastly the poor with only 200$. Having to have picked only 200$, I could only afford the cheapest things and could barely afford an education up to grade 5. My daily food was beans and rice, which I had only once a day. For heat, fuel, and water, I had to collect my own. I had to hack lumber from a nearby forest. I had to collect unfiltered water from a nearby stream for my water supply.

How did it feel to have more or less money than other people in the class?
It felt bad because I had only 200 dollars. I felt poor (not that I'm not already), and you will obviously feel better if you had more money, because you can buy whatever you want with enough money.

How did it feel to see what you could and could not afford at the Global Mall?
I could only buy the cheapest things and not have any luxury items. Two of the five things I got were free and still I didn't have any money left afterward.

How many of you could not afford education? What would your lives be like if you could not go to school?
I could afford cheap education if I didn't buy a luxury item, If I could not go to school, I would've probably tried to get a job, but I suspect that no one would hire me because they wouldn't want a person that was illiterate except the jobs that require strength, even so, they won't hire me because I'm not all that strong. They would rather have someone with better efficiency when the costs are the same.

How would it feel to have to choose between food and health care?
It felt rather awful because it was either better food or better health care and neither of them are that good. They were both cheap and cost more than half of my entire "bank account". I would rather have better food because if you had better food, you wouldn't have such low immunity to viruses because you will be more healthy and it would be less likely to get sick.

How many of you have ever been very sick or gone to a hospital or had friends and family who have? What would your life be like now if you had been unable to get medical care?
My grandma once fell down the stairs. She almost died and the fall affected her eyesight a lot. Now she is half blind and can barely see. If there had been no medical care at the time, I wouldn't ever see my grandma again. Even though she now has bad eyesight, it is good that she's still alive. My life would be very different from now, because usually when I go home, there is only my grandma, because my mother is in Taipei with my brothers and my dad is usually at work.The reason that my grandma had gotten medical care in time was because that my dad was a doctor so he had special privileges.

What were the impacts caused by people with fewer Global Mall Dollars, and what were the impacts caused by people with more Global Mall Dollars?
The impacts caused by the people with fewer money was much smaller than the impacts caused by the rich people. That is because when most rich people demand something of high quality, then the ingredients will have to be made of obtained and to obtain those ingredients, people who are in need of money, will apply for jobs to obtain the ingredients. That is one of the impacts rich people cause. I am not saying that poor people don't do any impact at all, the poor people also caused some impacts, for without them, the rich people would just be normal people with a lot of green paper, which is useless, because there would be no one to obtain the ingredients of an item and there would be no one to put the ingredients together to make the products.

Discuss the fact that roughly one-fifth of all people worldwide survive on less than $1 (U.S.) a day – how does this limit their choices, and what are the environmental, social, and global security implications of this?
They don't have money to buy a lot of food or clothing. They can't pay their house rent and they might live in a bad environment which is unhealthy for them.

When you were choosing what to buy, did you think about the environmental impact? For those of you in the lowest income range, did you have a choice about the environmental impact you produced? If not, how did it feel to not have a choice?
I didn't think of the environmental impact at the time, because I was already poor so I couldn't have gotten anything else if I wanted to live. I felt like I didn't have a choice about the environment impact because those were the minimal requirements for me to survive. It was either buy it or die. So of course I bought it.

I learned about a lot of things in Kiribati. I learned that everyone is good at swimming. When people in Kiribati are lost, they drank shark blood to replace water. They would wait for sharks to circle and then when the sharks come in for the kill, the people make them turn and when the sharks swim by, they slice the belly in half. What I learned most and probably won't forget is that they have no fresh water to drink because the salt water is seeping into their wells. I felt very sorry for the people in Kiribati, because they have to suffer the consequences of other people's faults. If I had money or power, I would tell the people of my country to stop using cars and change to electric powered cars.

Today in Citizenship class we watched the movie Avatar.

Jake's colleagues wanted to destroy the tree that the Navi people lived in because they wanted the "cheese" that laid under the tree. The "cheese" was a type of mineral that is called unobtanium. Jake's colleagues knew that they were about to destroy the Navi's habitat but they didn't care. All they wanted was the unobtanium. The geologists there told the marines about the tree being the Navi's habitat but they chose to ignore it.

It was also the same in America, when the Europeans came and conquered everything.

Today, the war in Iraq is also the same.

Final Project

A citizen is a person that is part of a community. A good citizen obeys the law. He respects other people. He should do his responsibility. When they are speaking. He does his homework. He would not run around in class. Good citizens of a community should not have prejudice against anyone. A prejudice is an opinion, it can be positive but usually, it is used in a negative way. Citizens should not have stereotypes which is a generalization that allows no one to be different. A person can be a citizen of a state, country, or the entire world, but to be a good citizen, the minimum would be to treat people equally, to obey the law, and to respect others.

Mike Hartoonian says that a subject is a consumer and a citizen is the producer. What it means is that a subject receives what a citizen gives hum, meaning that the citizen is the one in control.. Or that the subject is the follower while the citizen is the leader. In a different community, a citizen has different responsibilities but have the same rights. The citizen of a country is in charge of the government, because the citizens vote who they want, and when they are not happy they protest. THis happens in most countries but in some countries, their government has a different system and in some systems, the citizens are not allowed to vote. Citizens are in poser and the subjects are people under the law. Citizens have the right to protest institutions decisions, they have the right to rebel, protest.

Haiti is a small country in Central America. It is South of the US in the Caribbean Sea. Haiti speaks French because it was conquered by the French before. Haiti is one of the few countries that fought against slavery and actually succeeded. Taiwan's relation to Haiti is that Haiti is one of the few countries that agrees that Taiwan is independent from China, also called a sovereign country.

Ceramic Field Trip

We went to the Snake Kiln in Miaoli last week. It was originally called the dragon kiln but it was not allowed to be called the dragon because it was not allowed to be called the same as the king's. At first they told us about a small kiln that was used for making roof tiles. The smoke inside the kiln made the tiles gray. They then told us about how the snake kiln was usually made to bake vases. The vases made wine taste better because it had better clay. They also had stamps on the vases to tell what the wine was and where it came from.

The guide took us inside to show us the snake kiln. When we entered, we saw a long kiln with a door for throwing in wood, and a long funnel. At the front of the kiln, there was two holes that was called the snake's eyes. It was used for checking how much the clay has baked because in the olden days, there were no timers and they could only look in to see how the clay was doing.

We were given small blocks of clay to make whatever we wanted. Our hands had to be wet to keep the clay from cooling. I made a cup and Calvin ruined his and he ended up with blocks of clay that he called "abstract".

I think the 8 men are really nice, it is important to me because the men had such sympathy on the husband and wife, that they will help them push the car.

The people in Haiti are poor and have no money for food or water, just like in this story. In the story, they didn’t have money to buy oil, just like in Haiti.

Why should we care about what is happening in Haiti?

Today in citizenship, we learned about cliques and boundaries. We learned about how they affected us. Ms Sheila taught us about how we use it in real life. We also learned about why stereotyping and cliques hurtful. A stereotype would be when people sometimes say that all asian people are good at math, but some aren't and it makes them feel abnormal. Cliques sometimes hurt us because, they leave us out and make us feel lonely.

God's Children reflection

The people in the movie God's Children, which we watched during Language Arts class, survived by selling the trash they got from the garbage dump. Ever since the landslide that was cause by a big storm, the garbage truck stopped coming and their source of income was cut off. A man that lives in the garbage dump said that he hadn't ate anything in 4 or 5 days. Each family had more than three children and they were very desperate. They had to live in the dump since they couldn't afford real houses. Their houses were made from scrap metal they had found in the dump.

Tiring morning...
I wake up at about 6:30 each day, I go to my bathroom to take a shower. After that I brush my teeth then I wash my face and prepare to eat breakfast. My breakfast usually consists of oatmeal and a glass of milk. By that time it is around 7:50 and I go outside to take the school bus.
The children in Africa would probably wake up earlier than 6:30 each day, because they have to do chores. Their breakfast would probably be even more plain than oatmeal and a glass of milk. The children in Africa would have to walk to school because they are too poor to pay for the bus or their school doesn’t have a bus.

School time
Class starts with the first block, humanities. There are four blocks each day. We use computer at school everyday to do homework and stuff.
The children in Africa would not have a computer to use because they would rather spend the money on food or daily supplies.

Time to go home
After school, the school bus takes me home at about 5:15 PM. The ride home is boring and I can’t do anything. I usually arrive back at my house around 5:40.
Children in Africa would have to rush home to do chores for their family.
Homework
Everyday, once I get home, I go to my study and do homework. I usually spend one hour doing homework unless the teacher assigned us to do more than one hour of work.
Children in Africa would have to hurry to do their homework because they have to do their chores. Sometimes they might not have 1 whole hour to do homework.
Wonderful food
I eat dinner at around 6:30 PM and I eat until 7:00 PM. Sometimes my parents take me out to a restaurant to eat dinner.
The people in Africa would not have the money to eat such nice food. Their food would be more plain cause of their poorness.

Book worm
After dinner, I mess around and read if I have anything to read. Sometimes I get really bored and go chat with my friends. I love to listen to music and when I am at home, I usually have my music on.
Reading books or listening to music would be impossible for people in Africa. They simply have to much chores to do that.

Time for bed...
I sleep at around 10 everyday. My parents don’t like me staying up to late because they always say that it’s bad for your health and that you won’t get enough sleep so that you can’t pay attention in class the next day.
Children in Africa would have to sleep later than 10 everyday because they have so much chores to do.

Right now I'm in Taiwan Hsinchu City, Zhough Zun Rd. 626 alley. I am at 24˚49'09.23"N 120˚57'21.60"E. I am in my house's study at fourth floor. My house is about a 30 mins drive to school.

Physical means the landscapes or the land features. Human means man made stuff like buildings or stuff. Lastly cultural is humans interacting with geography.

People wear different clothes at different places like when your in somewhere cold, you wear heavy clothing. We need the environment for everything, food, shelter etc.

Movement is like a chain reaction. This thing happens that causes another thing to happen.

Formal means a city where people work. Not really a place to go for vacation. Perceptual means people from all places around the world go there and there are a lot of different languages in the region.

For one of my holiday I went to a city in California, America which was at Los Angeles. It is both, formal and perceptual. It is formal mainly because it is a city where people work. Not really a place to go for vacation. It is perceptual because people from all places around the world go there and there are a lot of different languages in the region.

Isolating the Variable

During today's Science Class, we tested our boats that we made out of 3 sheets of paper, 3 straws, and a meter of tape. We were assigned to make a boat that could withstand as many weights as possible. The weights were meant to be students crossing a "moat" which was actually our school fish pond. We were "supposed" to be attacked by chocolate missiles that would turn us into chocolate popsicles if we were shot.We all used the same materials, the same weights and the same water levels without any currents. Only the design of the boat was tested, for everything else was the same.

The uncontrolled variable of the assignment was being able to design whatever container you want. This did affect the outcome of the project because it differed in how many "students" could fit on the boat and whether the boat could withstand the weight.

Puzzles and Drift

During our Science class last week, we were given pieces of paper that were cut from a large piece. We were supposed to fit them together and make a one whole sheet of paper. The second day, we had to make it out of newspapers.

We learned in class so far that Alfred Wegener (I think that's how its spelt and pronounced vegener) had a theory about continental drift which is the moving of continents. Earth is actually a huge puzzle and the tectonic plates are the puzzle pieces. The tectonic plates move so the continents that are part of the huge tectonic plates also moves.

Basically I explained how the paper puzzle assignment was related to tectonic plates in the second paragraph.

To the badminton court

I start from my house, then walk right. You'll see a lot of greens there. You walk for about 5 meters and then turn left. You will see a narrow alley that would lead to a big metal gate. Walking down the alley you will pass buy many houses that are all look very similar. After you walk to the gate, turn left again and walk for one whole block. You will past a few restaurants and a gas station. After that, take two left turns and you will enter another alley. Walk down and you will see the badminton court.

Our Hums teacher, Mr. Carpenter, gave us an assignment to fly him around the world and cross the equator twice. (Not Literally)

We will start from Taipei Song San Airport and fly to Los Angeles for a 11 hour flight. Then we wander around in the streets of Los Angeles.

Second, take a flight to Villarrica Volcano in South America for a 9 hour flight. Hike around there for a couple of hours. Take a bus to Villarrica and take a break there at a hotel.

Submarine SMASH Day Reflection

First of all, let me tell you what SMASH day is. Our Science teacher, Mrs Smith, told us that smash is a day when we spend the entire class making something. We were split into groups and we were given a goal to reach before the end of the class. Do you remember when I last blogged about the paper tower thing? Where we tried to build a paper tower that could withstand 50 grams? Well that was also like SMASH day, but it was during Advisory so Mrs Smith said it doesn't count.

Whatever back on topic, Mrs. Smith told us to summarize what we did that day and here it is. This Monday, during Science class, we tried to build a periscope. Our goal was to be able to use the periscope and without having our heads above the table, look what was inside a cardboard box that was on the table. We were given one cardboard box, 10 sheets of paper, 1 meter of tape, four "magic" mirrors (according to Mrs. Smith), and whatever you find on them. My group did not bother to use the paper and only used 2 of the mirrors.

Next Mrs. Smith told us to reflect on what we did. In our group, which was Victor, Andrew, and me, we first made a model of the periscope, we used the cardboard box to make it hold, but it turned really ugly but it was usable. Next we had to solidify our model for it was falling apart. We used a long strip of tape that we found on the cardboard box and we used that to hold the two sides from opening. We did not model it to like a real periscope, but it worked just as well and it was easier to make. We had two mirrors on the end of the box, and we basically just used the cardboard box for most of it.

Lastly we had to give tips and suggestions to those of you that might have to do this later on in your lives, which is not really likely. Well here it is, firstly, you should make a model out of the box, and then improve it. Secondly, you have to remember to tape the mirrors tightly to the cardboard so it won't fall, which was exactly what happened on our first try. Don't make it fancy or anything, just make sure it worked, because some of the other groups made it too fancy and in the end, they just gave up.

So the men had one continent for each person. The people built automatic robots to hunt and farm for them, each person had to trade to each other to survive, because there were things they could not grow or hunt. They were too busy to fly all the way over because they had to manage the robots in case the robots went haywire. So they sent planes with set destinations. The people managed survive for a 26 years, but then the robots did went haywire and killed them all.

A politician in Scotland want to tackle the problem by giving thousands of kids free entry to matches.

And Scotland's sports minister is backing the plan.

MSP Frank McAveety has been campaigning for the idea to be brought in since December.

He thinks it would be a good way to attract new fans at little cost to the clubs.

The idea's already got the support of some Scottish clubs and players.

Former Scotland star and Hearts' captain Gary Mackay agrees that it would be a good way of getting kids involved in sport early on.

"Supporters are the lifeblood of the game and the earlier youngsters get involved the quicker they get the bug and become lifelong supporters," he said.

Research Reflections:
For the past month, we have been researching body systems on our own.

One good thing about doing it this way is that we can find information on our own and letting us have more freedom. It is also fun checking out different websites. Researching on our own lets us understand better what we're doing.

One thing I didn't like about doing it this way is that it can get very frustrating when you can't find the answer to a question and you just get really pissed. I don't like it when you just can't find the answer and when you do, you have to change it into your own words.

I think Mrs. Smith planned it this way because we can understand better when we do it on our own instead of Mrs. Smith just printing down the information and we don't understand. We can learn more on our own because we know what we are typing not just reading it or listening to it. If we don't understand the information on the internet, it is useless if we just plagiarize or we can't learn a lot of things.

One suggestion I have for Mrs. Smith is to make us hand in the work earlier so we can do more under pressure because you get really nervous about the work and you have to hand it in the next day. Which means when we are not under pressure we have more time to write so we can write more.

Another suggestion I have for Mrs. Smith is to give us less information so that we can handle harder questions.

Cat's crimes get owner in a flap

It's great being given new toys all the time, but not when they're covered in cat drool and not when you know they've been pinched from someone else's pet!

That's why Frankie the cat's owner, Julie Bishop, is in a flap - Frankie's brought about 35 stuffed toys home in the past year but none of them are his.

She thinks the two-year-old moggy is swiping them from other homes in Swindon, but doesn't know how or why.

Now she's desperately trying to trace the toys' owners to give them back.

Julie says Frankie is always coming back to the house with 'presents' for them, including mice, but the number of soft toys has rocketed over the past few months.

"He's very pleased with himself," she said. "He gives us a big miaow to let us know when he's brought them in.

"At first it was quite funny, but now it's obvious somebody's bought all these toys for their pet and now they don't have any - they're all here!"

He says he really doesn't know which of the three acts will take the top prize of a record contract worth £1m.

Zoo poo used to grow fruit & veg

An animal park in Leicestershire has started recycling the hundreds of tonnes of poo produced by its animals to help grow crops for them to feed on.

Twycross Zoo has about 1,000 animals, which produce about 800 tonnes of poo every year - that's about the same weight as 160 elephants!

But now, instead of sending the muck to landfill, they've got a machine which can turn the poo into compost.

The compost's used on crops to feed the animals, then the cycle starts again!

Zoo conservation officer Claire Pipes said: "We buy the food, feed it to the animals and it comes out the other end.

"We collect it, compost it and grow stuff for the animals which then goes back into their mouths."

Elephants are the biggest contributors to the zoo's poo mountain and keepers say this is the best way they've found to keep all the waste on site.

Compost is an organic material that can be made from rotten food scraps, garden waste and the poo of some animals.

It's great at helping things grow in the garden as it's full of things called nutrients that feed the soil.

New park to protect gorillas

A new park has been created in the African country of Cameroon to try to protect a critically endangered species of gorilla. There are only thought to be about 300 Cross River gorillas left in the world and up to 115 of them are living in the Takamanda National Park. Part of the problem they face is from hunters and people who cut down trees in the forests where they like to live. But animal experts say the new national park should help to stop that threat. Sreven Sanderson from the Wildlife Conservation Society said the creation of the park sent a powerful message to the world about conservation. "The government of Cameroon is to be commended for taking this step in saving the Cross River gorilla for future generations," he said.

Are you off on your witch's broomstick to go trick or treating tonight or have you been told you've got to stay in?

According to a survey, more than half of the parents asked said they'd banned their kids from trick or treating because they think it can all go wrong.

Lots of them are worried some spooky costumes frighten little kids or older people too much, and in the past people have got hurt when tricks go wrong.

Police are doing what they can by getting much tougher on trouble-makers.

In some parts of the UK, there are already £80 fines for people who get caught throwing eggs or damaging people's homes.

A police spokesman said: "Most people who go trick or treating are out to have fun and everybody respects that, but sadly there are sometimes people who take the tricking a bit far."

One town in Derbyshire's even giving teenagers free James Bond tickets to try to stop them causing trouble.

Boy finds cheetah in back garden

A nine-year-old boy in Cambridgeshire got a huge shock when he came face-to-face with a cheetah in his back garden.

Toby was playing with his bike when he spotted the big cat. He ran indoors as the animal pounced on his bike and started tearing up the seat.

The cheetah had escaped from a nearby zoo, but its keepers soon arrived with the police to capture it.

They said the creature had escaped because of a broken electric fence, but wouldn't have harmed Toby.

Cheetahs are the fastest animals on land, and can reach speeds of over 60 miles per hour.

The three-year-old creature which Toby found in his garden had escaped from Hamerton Zoo.

Zoo director Andrew Swales said: "He wouldn't pose any danger and his reaction to strangers would be the same as a pet dog - either a friendly greeting or a guarded retreat.

"I do not know of any cases of a cheetah attacking a human."

Boo Boo, the smallest dog in the world

A tiny dog from America called Boo Boo has been named as the smallest pooch in the world.

At just four inches (10.16cm) tall, the Chihuahua is the world's smallest dog in height, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.

Boo Boo's owner, Lana Elswick, breeds Chihuahuas, and said Boo Boo was the size of her thumb when she was born.

Mrs Elswick told an American newspaper that the Chihuahua is a total diva, and her favourite food is crisps.

Boo Boo hasn't got much bigger since being born a year ago, weighing just 42.5 grams (1.5 ounces).

Mrs Elswick explained that she had her dog measured in May, but didn't send it to world record bosses until June.

Hamster gives up life on-the-run

Zoe Appleby was looking after Fudgie for a friend when the furry explorer made a run for it and shot down a hole in the kitchen floor.

Everyone feared the worst when even fire crews using a chocolate-covered camera and vacuum cleaner couldn't find Fudgie and tempt her to come back out.

But now she's tired of life underground and climbed back into her cage by herself.

Zoe's dad, Derek Appleby, saw Fudgie back in her cage as he got ready for work on Thursday morning.

Her mom, Angela, said they were so happy that she was back.

"When my husband found her, it was like Christmas morning for the children," she said.

Imagine that thing is on a mountain and when you are climbing up the mountain, you are very excited but when you see that the thing is just a rock, you will realize that the result is not the most important but the journey is the most important. This is also the same as understanding the question. When you see a question, have to understand the calculations and not just finding the answer. Karl Merk lost his arms in a farm accident six years ago, but in July, doctors did a 15-hour operation to fix the donor arms to his body. But doctors say it could take up to two years before he can properly use his hands again.

Scientists think that they discovered the 'deepest ever' living fish ever. Experts from the UK and Japan caught 17 of the strange-looking snailfish on camera nearly five miles under the Pacific ocean, near Japan. Researchers are pretty excited about their find as they said the only other examples of life at that depth were old specimens that are held in museums.

Teachers think that some kids are now behaving so badly in school that the only way to keep them under control is by beating them with a stick. One in five teachers think they should be allowed to use a stick called a cane to hit you as a punishment. You cannot cane children at school now because it is against the law. In the past, teachers were allowed to use physical punishment on badly behaved kids.

The last typhoon destroyed a lot of buildings, a tunnel with people inside, and a bridge with cars on it. More than eleven people died. It will take very long to replace everything and it won't be possible to replace the deaths. This typhoon was terrible for Taiwan.
